Effects of Silica Fumes in Concrete

Effects of Silica Fume on the Strength and Durability Properties of Concrete

This article presents the effects of silica fume on compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, resistance against chloride penetration and water absorption of concrete. Results indicated that the use of silica fume in concrete increased the compressive strength of concrete. Increase in water-binder ratio reduced the compressive strength of concrete irrespective of the use of silica fume. Silica fume had no noticeable effect on the splitting tensile strength of concrete. The resistance against chloride ion penetration increased with the increase in the contents of silica fume in concrete. A reduction in water-binder ratio (from 0.35 to 0.30) increased the ability of the concrete to resist chloride ion’s penetration. The introduction of silica fume in concrete reduced the water absorption capacity of concrete. A change in water-binder ratio also dramatically reduced the water absorption of concrete.
